High-Class Quick-Fit Awnings
sunFLIP is a super light awning system designed for quick assembly and dismantling. The system is extremely variable and can therefore be applied to a wide range of situations. Every sunFLIP system is optimised for the specific purpose and custom made to order.
Basically the system concept is to set individually shaped sun awnings between free standing carbon poles, and various attachment points on the ship super structure. The sunFLIP quick release fittings and the extremely strong but light carbon poles results in a very strong system which can be set up and taken off quickly, at any time.
sunFLIP is the awning system of choice when it comes to super yachts and definitely the optimum with regards to style and aesthetics, resilience, weight, handling and durability.
For yachts from 30 m to 200 m loa.
sunFLIP is available with three different styles of poles:
sunFLIP poles are processed and equipped individually meaning that the sunFLIP system offers full variability and adaptability for each individual application case. The supports are faired and coated with a high-gloss 2k polyurethane coating system. A Carbon clear coat finish is also available.
sunFLIP carbon poles are not just simple carbon pipes; they represent the optimum performance in technology for this application. Through a long series of experiments with numerous load and breaking tests in our own workshop, we have optimised the poles’ laminate structure.
In addition to the advantages that are normally experienced when using carbon, such as it being lightweight, stable and corrosion resistant, sunFLIP posts also offer you the following advantages that are not offered by competitors:
The closing cap for the sunFLIP posts shown on the left is made from 1.4404 stainless steel block material. All Reckmann stainless steel fittings are made from this highly corrosion-resistant and polishable alloy.
We can supply this cap manually high-gloss polished, which is our standard, or painted.
The advantage of this system is that the top bracket can be removed whenever necessary to allow optimal access to the tensioning system inside the pole.
On request, we can also supply slanted top caps that are made from 1.4404 stainless steel and milled from block material. These can also be high-gloss polished or, alternatively, painted. They, too, can be removed.
sunFLIP roller boxes have mirror polished stainless steel housings, discs and axles. The stainless steel discs run on a bronze bushing. All visual surfaces and the heads of fixing bolts are mirror polished by hand.
sunFLIP roller boxes are a Reckmann design and are manufactured and used exclusively for the sunFLIP system.
poleLIGHT is an LED light that is built into the sunFLIP support. We supply these with different LED inserts for daylight white or halogen light. On request, we are also happy to supply different RGB colours. We include a power cable equipped with a plug that can be removed by day – or a hidden cable with plug connection integrated in the twistFIT fitting. A fully wireless solution with induction technology is also available.
StripLIGHT is a vertical LED rope light which is integrated flush into the pole. The light emittance is smooth and continous, and any colour or changing colour schemes can be programmed.
We supply bags for awnings and sunFLIP posts. These are optional and you can choose whether or not you want them supplied.
The outside of sunFLIP pipe bags is made from extremely resistant material and the bags themselves have soft padding inside, meaning you can be sure the paintwork won’t get scratched. They have webbing straps for carrying, sturdy and stable zips with a topside chafer and come with a printed advisory notice on what position to place the pipe or sail stored inside the bag.
The standard tensioning system for sunFLIP is a rope block & tackle system hidden inside the tube. A piece of rope runs from the awning into the top end of the pole, over a block & tackle system inside the pole, and exits near the bottom end of the pole.
To tension the awning, this line is pulled. The block & tackle cascade inside the pole will multiply the force applied, and ensures a controlled tension on the awning. The line is then simply secured on the small stainless steel cleat., and excessive rope is pushed into the tube through a small stainless steel ring hole.
The automatic tensioning system has a self-locking mechanical gearbox inside the sunFLIP pole.
The system is operated externally using a cordless drill. The system works with a 1:1 rope purchase which means that the risk of the rope jamming or chafing is significantly reduced.
We deliver the system as a single, or as a combined twin outhaul system.
All sunFLIP tensioning systems - block & tackle and automatic - are designed as a cartridge and can easily be pulled out of the pole as a whole unit, after removing just three screws. All the components can be checked, serviced and even replaced with ease.
When the work is completed, the crew can insert the tensioning system back into the pole as a whole unit, and secure it with 3 screws.
We supply flush-deck-mounted sockets for sunFLIP poles. The deck sockets are placed in a recess in the deck, or in the coaming or bulwark. Insert the pole, twist it to lock it - and it is safely held and rotates freely, without any further tensioning or support being required. Major advantages of twistFIT over its competition:
railFIT is the choice in case sunFLIP poles shall be attached to the super structure, or the guard rail. Various versions are available, to fit the individual application.
The clickFIT fitting makes for easier on-deck installation (as opposed to in-deck). It is mounted with 2 M8 screws and all it needs is a reinforcing plate beneath it to support heavy loads. We supply the fitting with a POM washer for optimal isolation, which allows the inside of the dome to be drained to the deck.
The clickFIT sail attachment fitting is a Reckmann design that was especially developed for the sunFLIP system. clickFIT terminals are made from 1.4404 stainless steel, milled from solid material, and mirror polished by hand.
The awning is attached with a rigg terminal style hook fitting. This ensures a strong and reliable connection which only takes a second to attach.
The flush-deck version of clickFIT shown here comes with a weld-in pod supplied by us, which allows for vertical adjustment of the fitting - an important feature for the installation, as filler thickness often is an unknown value.
Nowadays there is a wide range of technical textiles from all over the world, many of which are suitable for use as awnings. In each individual case and at the request of each customer, we use different textile materials for sunFLIP awnings and the customer can choose their awning’s style, colour, structure, porosity, weight etc. Initially we make a distinction between porous and non-porous materials. There are classic product lines, which look modern and are also purely high-tech fabrics.
A special feature with the design of Reckmann awnings is that we our in the 15 years awning product developments a special Kkow-how have acquired the so-called textile engineering.
Textile engineering refers to the design of 3-dimensional prestressed tensile structures with the means of the latest computer technology. This science goes much further into the depth of the form and stability behavior of 3-dimensionally tensioned awnings, than does the knowledge of a classical sailmaker.
At Reckmann, we design and construct every single awning system using this technology. That makes our systems perform in a superior way, with optimum longevity and durability.
Unlike most of our competition, we don’t just use any sail manufacturer when it comes to the configuration of our awning membranes. We have developed a long-standing partnership with specialists whose knowledge is a deciding factor in the sail configuration. The art is all in the detail. Just take a good look at our awnings - you’ll discover a lot:
The belt straps are enclosed in such a way that, from above, i. e. more or less the reverse side, an observer wouldn’t see them. The corner fittings are incorporated with handcrafted premium quality. Their orientation is always precisely matching. This is because this direction is not dependent on the sail manufacturer’s intuition, but is rather a result of our textile engineering.
And, incidentally, you will discover masterfully handcrafted workmanship: smooth, perfectly straight seams, UV-resistant thread, elegantly introduced reinforcements, truly invisible and integrated tensioning elements, hand-polished sheet rings, pinRINGs - a Reckmann invention - clewBOARDs made from block material with edges rounded off neatly by machine (if made from metal) or prepregs that are also milled by machine (if made from carbon), protective cases for clewBOARDS and much more.
Depending on the light transmittance of the selected material the area under an open membrane presents itself in a particularly pleasant light.
Closed materials are available in higher weights and thus extremely high tensile strength, dimensionally stable and waterproof.
Both groups have an excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation and dirt particles in the air.
pinRING is another Reckmann invention. It’s the ideal way to connect an awning to its tensioning line. Fast, tough, reliable and easy to remove.
The idea of the clewBOARD is taken from sail making, which is a principal that is frequently used for self-tacking jibs or mainsail headboards. The sail area is enlarged using a clewBOARD in the corner. This technology optimises the shaded surfaces and often avoids light gaps under the awning, in the transition area of several sail elements. We supply clewBOARDS made from a variety of materials:
clewBOARDS are made-to-measure for sunFLIP systems.
